SHEET 01 / API GATEWAY COST REFERENCE
Sheet 13 / Provider Detail

Google Cloud API Gateway pricing,
the one that is not Apigee.

Google sells two API gateways and most pricing guides conflate them. Cloud API Gateway is the lightweight serverless one: 2 million calls free every month, then $3.00 per million, no fixed fees. Apigee is the enterprise platform with a $365/month floor. Below: the verified rate card, worked totals at three volumes, and exactly when each Google product makes sense.

Δ Quick verdict

For serverless backends on Google Cloud (Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, App Engine), API Gateway is one of the cheapest managed gateways anywhere: $0 up to 2M calls/month, ~$24 at 10M, ~$294 at 100M in call fees. Pick it over Apigee unless you need monetization, a developer portal or advanced analytics.

Data transfer (billed separately)

Inbound data is free. Outbound uses Google Cloud Premium Tier network pricing. The North America to North America rates below are representative; intercontinental and China-bound traffic costs more (up to $0.19/GiB).

Monthly outbound volumePrice per GiB (NA to NA)
0 to 10,240 GiB$0.105
10,240 to 153,600 GiB$0.08
Above 153,600 GiB$0.06

Apigee pay-as-you-go totals = Standard API Proxy calls at $20/million + Base environment $365/month; the 100M row assumes traffic fits the Base environment’s 50 QPS cap. Detail / Two Products

API Gateway vs Apigee: Google’s two gateways explained

This is the single most common confusion in Google Cloud API pricing. Cloud API Gateway and Apigee are separate products with separate consoles, separate pricing pages and a roughly 7x to 100x cost difference depending on workload. API Gateway is an Envoy-based managed proxy you configure with an OpenAPI 2.0 spec, built for putting auth, quotas and routing in front of serverless backends. Apigee is a full API management suite aimed at organisations that treat APIs as products.

Rule of thumb: if your APIs are an implementation detail of your own apps, use API Gateway and keep the bill near zero. If your APIs are a product with external consumers, partners or paying developers, the Apigee premium buys the portal, monetization and analytics you would otherwise build yourself. Detail / vs AWS

Against AWS API Gateway

■ Google wins on

  • Free tier: 2M calls/month forever vs AWS’s 1M/month that expires after 12 months
  • Simplicity: one rate card, no REST vs HTTP API product split to decode
  • High volume rate: $1.50/million above 1B calls vs AWS HTTP API’s $0.80 floor is closer than the headline rates suggest

■ AWS wins on

  • Mid-band rate: HTTP API at $1.00/million vs Google’s $3.00/million between 2M and 1B calls
  • Data transfer: $0.09/GB vs Google’s $0.105/GiB at typical volumes
  • Features: WebSockets, caching, usage plans and WAF integration that Google’s gateway lacks

In practice the choice follows your cloud: API Gateway only fronts Google Cloud backends well, and AWS API Gateway is AWS-native. Cost rarely justifies crossing clouds at these absolute numbers. Compare the full AWS rate card on the AWS pricing sheet or model your own workload in the calculator.

Frequently Specified

Questions answered on this sheet

Q01.How much does Google Cloud API Gateway cost?+
Google Cloud API Gateway charges per API call, per billing account, per month: the first 2 million calls are free, calls from 2 million to 1 billion cost $3.00 per million, and calls above 1 billion cost $1.50 per million. Data transfer out is billed separately at Google Cloud's Premium Tier network rates, starting at $0.105/GiB for North America. There are no instance fees, environment fees or minimum charges. A 10M call/month workload costs about $24 in call fees.
Q02.Does Google Cloud API Gateway have a free tier?+
Yes, and it is permanent: the first 2 million API calls per month per billing account are free, every month, with no 12-month expiry. That is double Cloudflare's 3M-equivalent on a calls basis vs AWS, whose 1M/month free tier lapses after 12 months. Note the free allowance is per billing account, not per gateway, so multiple gateways under one account share the same 2M pool.
Q03.What is the difference between Google Cloud API Gateway and Apigee?+
They are two separate Google products. API Gateway is a lightweight, fully managed gateway for serverless backends (Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, App Engine), configured with an OpenAPI spec and priced purely per call at $3.00/million after 2M free. Apigee is Google's enterprise API management platform with developer portals, monetization, analytics and policy programmability, priced from $20/million calls plus environment fees from $365/month per region. Apigee's entry cost is roughly $385/month; API Gateway can run at $0.
Q04.When should I use Apigee instead of Google Cloud API Gateway?+
Use Apigee when you need API products and developer onboarding, monetization (rate plans, billing, revenue share), advanced analytics, or complex policy transformations across many teams. Use API Gateway when you need auth (API keys, JWT, IAM), rate limiting via quotas, and routing in front of serverless backends at minimal cost. A common pattern: start on API Gateway, move to Apigee only when you start selling API access or managing a portfolio of APIs across an organisation.
Q05.Is Google Cloud API Gateway cheaper than AWS API Gateway?+
At low volume, yes; at high volume, no. Google's permanent 2M free calls beat AWS's expiring free tier, and at 10M calls/month Google costs about $24 vs $10 for AWS HTTP API in request fees ($3.00/million on 8M billable calls vs $1.00/million on all 10M). AWS HTTP API's $1.00/million undercuts Google's $3.00/million above the free band, though it beats AWS REST API's $3.50/million. Data transfer is similar: Google from $0.105/GiB Premium Tier vs AWS $0.09/GB.
Q06.How does Google Cloud API Gateway billing work?+
API Gateway does not appear as its own line item. Each API call is reported as a tracked operation by the Service Control API, and the charge shows up under Service Control on your Google Cloud bill. Data transfer out appears under network pricing (Premium Tier). This catches teams out during cost reviews: if you are auditing gateway spend, search your bill for Service Control operations, not for an API Gateway SKU.
